Busyness

Sometimes my husband and I joke that we run a bed and breakfast. We do love to have house guests, so it is not meant as a complaint. April has turned out to be one of those months at our house, and honestly it has been nice for me to have a distraction from the daily gloom that had settled around here.

In the past two weeks we've had three sets of company. Although Texas observed spring break several weeks ago, most people in Louisiana had theirs last week or the week before. After a visit from my sister-in-law for Easter, my sister (who teaches 2nd grade) and nephews came during the next week for their break from school. This week my in-laws were here for a few days during their spring break (my mother-in-law is an elementary school librarian). It has been a nice few weeks of family visits, but I must admit that I was worn out! After seeing the last car off on Wednesday morning, I crawled back into bed and slept for an additional three hours despite the fact that some neighbors were getting a new roof. With the help of some earplugs I was able to catch up on some much-needed rest!

This week the weather here has been gorgeous after what I've been calling the Storm of the Century. Last Saturday we got more rain than I have ever seen here in the past 8 years, hurricanes and tropical storms included. In a matter of about 3 hours, my town was drenched with nearly 12 inches of rain! I've never seen our yard hold that much water, but fortunately we were never in fear of the house flooding.

Water in the backyard (the white shed is still tarped after damage from Hurricane Ike)

It became quite an eventful trip home from Tar.get, however, for my sister and me. We had to try several alternate routes home due to flooded roads, and we were both pretty nervous by the time it was over! I learned a few things about our coping mechanisms, though. My way of handling the situation was to call Chuck and tell him that I didn't know what to do. My sis repeated "Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh" each time we had to navigate through streets covered with swirling water of unknown depths! I know we both uttered some frantic "Lord, save me" prayers (a la Peter in Matthew 14), and thankfully we finally made it home without getting stranded!

Finally, it has taken a couple of days to get caught up with reading blogs again but I think I'm mostly updated. I was amazed at how much I had missed in a mere 7 days. I have been praying especially for those blog friends who have experienced heartbreaking losses over the last few days, and I continue to pray for those who still wait. You guys are never far from my thoughts! Thanks again for all of the awesome comments and support.

Okay, you might rival Oregon for rain! Wowza! I'm so glad you made it home okay. I know we've been driving home from an outing and driven over rapidly rising creeks and rivers thinking, "I hope we make it!" Very scary indeed.

Oh, and aren't ear plugs awesome! I sleep with them every night and they have saved my sanity and marriage!

Wow! That is alot of water. We had a lot of flooding around here last year...this year has not been that bad. The bugs that came out of the flood waters was something...I couldn't go for walks because I was always swatting at something and getting annoyed. At night...there were swarms of bugs I've never seen before. Grosss....so anyways...you are in my prayers too!!! I know what you mean about distractions....sometimes they are such a blessing!

Wow! That is a lot of rain. We had a bunch here in Florida as well. I think I would be a combination of you and your sister going back and forth between "oh my gosh, oh my gosh" and I have to call John (said in freak-out voice). By the way, I love your back porch/deck area.

I'm glad the visits from family provided a much needed break. I am praying for God to completely lift this depression and bring healing.

Erin - It would help me tremendously to be able to sleep in earplugs every night (my husband snores)! Usually they bother me too much, but I guess I was REALLY tired!

pj - Fortunately, the water drains off pretty fast here and doesn't stick around for long afterwards. BUT, we do see more mosquitoes after all that rain. :( I always worry about snakes!

Beth - Yuck! :)

LOL, thanks Becky!

I appreciate your prayers.

I have super duper soft foamy ear plugs. They are the earplugs of Nascar! Only ones that don't bother me. I get them free from my mother who works at a place that uses them. I'd be happy to send you a trial pair if you think they might work. I heart them!

That was eventful! We've been through a lot together and we definitely added a new one! Wow! "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh..." LOL! I WAS the one driving! :) XOXO

Hmm ... earplugs to keep the snoring out ... now that's a thought. Do you suppose they make something that keeps away the wiggling and rolling and cover-hogging, too?

Seriously, I'm glad you've made it through the storm and popped back in to tell us all you're still here. I was beginning to wonder if you decided 100 posts was enough. :)

Believe it or not, here in Johannesburg, South Africa, that is what our summer rainfall is like. In the matter of an hour or two everything floods, walls crash down, cars get washed off bridges, its hectic. But I LOVE the thunder and lightening that goes along with the downpour!

You have been very busy! And can't believe all the rain! Wow!

Thanks so much for the support on my blog! It means so much. I always love to get comments from you. :)

(((HUGS))))

Oh, and if you could respond to this comment, to my e-mail, that would be great. :) I've been meaning to put you in my address list and I keep forgetting. It must be a blonde thing. :)

Thanks Stacey!!

Whoa! What a mess.

But do be careful about driving in standing water. You NEVER know how deep the water is. NEVER drive through standing water. Very dangerous.

And last August, I pulled out of a parking lot during a heavy rainstorm, realized it was coming down too hard to see out the windsheild - and vowed to pull into the next parking lot entrance (a mere 20 feet) I didn't make it. My car drowned in 6 inches of water.
Seriously dead. Totalled the engine.

I will never drive in heavy rain again. Just food for thought.

Your back porch is so lovely! I love storms but yeah, that does seem like a lot of rain!
